A community can encompass many things. It can be defined as a physical space such as a town, city, or village. A community can also be a social group such as school or church. A community can also be defined as people who share common nationality or ethnicity. Everyone belongs to a number of different communities at one time. This is important to human beings, as strong communities are an important source for a sense of belonging.

In 2022, 65% of LIFE Survey Respondents indicated that the most important reason they live in Marathon County is to be near friends and family.

Similar to the past two surveys, respondents report that friends and family are what connects them to their community. But a sense of community goes beyond family ties. Participating in shared experiences, such as events and activities, can help to build a sense of community. A strong sense of community is fostered among members when people feel accepted and valued. To that end, many government, community groups, businesses, families, and individuals have continued to expand upon assets and build new connection pathways as opportunities for connection and engagement in Marathon County over the past several years.
